Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs naturally in rock and soil. Due to its strength and heat-resistant properties, asbestos has been widely used in building materials. It is also found in various manufactured products, including roofing shingles and tiles. Additionally, asbestos is used in friction-based products such as brakes and transmission parts, as well as heat-resistant fabrics and coatings. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most uses of asbestos are not banned. Only a few uses are restricted under existing regulations.

  • How do you know that you have asbestos?

Per Colorado state law (CDPHE, Regulation 8 part B), a test is required to prove that the building material is non-asbestos-containing. If a test is not conducted, the presence of asbestos should be assumed, and the material should be treated as asbestos-containing and removed accordingly.

  • How long does asbestos abatement take?

The timeline depends entirely on the scope of the project. Most projects require permits and a 10-day waiting period.

  • Can I live in a house undergoing abatement?

Yes. The affected areas will be contained for your safety, and unaffected areas will remain safe for you to reside in.

  • Do we need to remove or destroy anything from a space during abatement?

Yes. The affected areas must be contained, and any materials within these areas must be removed for safe disposal. Unaffected areas will remain safe to use.

  • Can I work in a building undergoing abatement?

Yes, as long as all contents in the affected areas are removed. Items such as appliances, furniture, and electronics must be relocated to ensure no contamination occurs.

  • How do you remove asbestos?

Asbestos must be removed under engineered controls, using full personal protective equipment (PPE) and respirators. All materials that are to be removed must be completely saturated during the abatement process.

  • What are the health impacts of asbestos?

Asbestos exposure can lead to serious diseases, such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other respiratory conditions. If you believe you’ve been affected, contact your physician immediately.

  • If asbestos is in one room, is it present in the whole home or building?

The only way to know is to test or to assume that asbestos is present in other parts of the building. Testing is the best way to confirm its presence.

  • Do I have to worry if my home or structure was built after 1989?

Per Colorado state law (CDPHE, Regulation 8 part B), homes must be tested for the presence of asbestos regardless of the year they were built. We’ve found asbestos in homes as recently as 2015.

  • Do you have to remove asbestos from a whole structure or just the specified area being disturbed?

Asbestos-containing materials (ACM) must be removed from any areas that are damaged, demolished, or being replaced. ACM may be present in other parts of the structure, but it’s only a concern if those materials are being disturbed.
